Welcome to Big Score. A sourdough breadmaker that makes a limited range of handcrafted loaves baked to crusty perfection daily by Johan van der Walle.
About
The story began as a dream from San Francisco, explored in Melbourne, built in Motueka, and established in Appleby.
Testimony from a Mama, business owner and partner in crime.
Bread is a gift for us.
We use it to nourish, like all day; breakfast, second breakfast, lunch and after school where entire loaves get demolished. By dinner time we are done eating door stop sized wedges with slabs of butter- Bigscore will be transformed into a crouton or a crumb or a pizza base.
There have been times where the only decent looking thing in the cupboard was a couple of 2 day old Kolouri.
We pass on loaves as tokens of love and gratitude and swap for better looking veges than we can grow. We literally toss them over the fence to the neighbours and pop it through a dusty car window to say cheers for dropping the kid off.
It travels to music lessons for the long suffering tutor and to school for Bingo prizes and shared Kai.
Fresh bread feeels good to eat and even better to share. It's always received with a smile that's more like a face hug like that ‘yuusss’ expression of true delight, hands on heart.
Though I grit through a second shift Stamping bags as the sun retreats and I hoist a sleeping baker off the sofa most evenings, I think,
Bread is a gift.
